Botox® Cosmetic

Botox® Cosmetic Information

botox-logoBotox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxin A) is a safe, FDA approved agent used to temporarily reduce fine wrinkles in the face, especially in the area between the eyebrows (glabellar area).  Botox is more than a wrinkle cure; it allows an individual to age gracefully while looking their best.  It can treat conditions that, in the past, not even plastic surgery could remedy. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Botox is the #1 requested non-surgical procedure in the United States. Botox acts to separate nerve impulses from muscle actions.  This action lessens muscle contractions in the area of treatment and, thereby, diminishes wrinkles.  Botox is not a poison and cannot cause an infection.  It does not have a systemic effect.  It is not permanent.

“I’ve been self conscious about the wrinkles on my forehead for quite awhile now. The timing was right so I gave it a try. I was nervous but everything worked out even better than I expected. The results are significant! I would do it again. Thanks!”

Preoperatively:

Following an eye exam at Claris Eye Care and Surgery, the use of Botox® Cosmetic is discussed with you.

Your specific goals of treatment are identified.

Photographs are taken showing the facial areas before Botox injections.

The areas to treat are marked with a wax pencil.

Using a very small needle, the medication is injected into the muscle just under the skin.

Usually only a mild pin prick is felt.

If you are taking a blood thinning agent, contact your primary care physician before procedure.

Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to the treatment.

Bring along makeup for minor touch-ups, as we remove makeup from the treatment area(s).

Postoperatively:

You may feel some discomfort at the site of the injection and mild swelling or bruising can happen, also.

Do not lie down or bend over for 4 hours following treatment.

You will be asked not to rub the injected area or engage in vigorous exercise for remainder of the day (i.e., lifting heavy weights that would cause you to frown or strenuous exercise that would cause you to sweat excessively causing you to wipe sweat off of your forehead area)

Makeup may be used immediately.

Do not expect to see preliminary results for at least 3 – 4 days or maximum results until 10 – 14 days postoperatively

A postoperative visit 2 weeks following treatment is recommended to assess the results and to compare pre/post-treatment photographs.   Additional treatment to enhance the effect can be considered at 2 weeks, but full treatment usually lasts 3 to 4 months.  As the effect lessens further treatments are given.
