At Claris, we make a point of conducting annual eye exams on our diabetic patients, when possible.
An exam consists of placing drops in the eye to make the black part of the eye (pupil) larger. This is called dilation. This allows us to better see the back of the eye for potential problems. When we can identify and treat eye problems early, we help prevent more serious problems later.
We make a special point of conducting dilated eye exams for those diabetic patients who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, as pregnancy presents unique blood glucose management challenges.
In some cases, an argon laser is used to close off leaking blood vessels, helping to stop the flow of blood that can cause impaired vision.
If a lot of blood has leaked into the vitreous portion of the eye (see diagram above), a surgery called a vitrectomy may be conducted. In this surgery, blood and fluid from the vitreous are removed and replaced with clean fluid. Doing this helps improve eyesight.
