Like many health issues, there are options in treating glaucoma.
Glaucoma is commonly the result of elevated pressure within the eye. This is caused by blockage in the tubes that allow fluid to flow out of the eye. Treating glaucoma requires opening these tubes.
One option for opening blocked tubes is the use of eye drop medication. A series of different medications is available. At Claris, we help patients find the right medication, in the right amount for their unique needs. Over time, we make adjustments to medications as the eye changes to lessen the chance of future additional damage caused by improper medicating.

Sometimes, medication alone does not work. Another option is to open the blocked tubes using a special laser at the Phillips Eye Institute. This procedure has a 90% success rate in lowering eye pressure. In some cases, more than one laser procedure may be required.
When medication and laser surgery do not work, a surgical opening can be made in the white of the eye (sclera) to achieve lower eye pressure. This surgery is conducted at the Phillips Eye Institute under local anesthesia and sedation.
If you have glaucoma, or if you are helping a parent or someone with glaucoma, we will help you consider all of your options in its treatment. This will include discussing the rates of recovery, all possible outcomes and risks, as well as costs of various procedures.
