Standard or traditional cataract surgery is where a monofocal or single-focus lens is implanted after Dr. Carlson removes your cataract. This lens is designed to provide clear vision at a single distance point. This is the lens choice if you prefer to continue wearing glasses. This means most people without astigmatism will be able to see objects far away. However, you will need glasses for reading and any type of close, detailed work. Monofocal IOLs have been the standard implant used for decades to help patients after cataract removal. Health care insurance typically pays for standard cataract surgery with a monofocal lens implant, less any deductible, copays or coinsurance depending on your plan.
